BLS (Basic Life Support) Courses

BLS provides the skills to recognize and respond to cardiovascular emergencies and choking for adults, children, and babies. Basic Life Support skills are required for nursing staff, doctors, EMS providers, and care aides, medical and dental professionals. You may also benefit from having your Basic Life Support level if you are a professional with a fire service or rescue team, a sports medicine professional, a lifeguard or a ski patroller.

Basic Life Support Field Guide

Note: As of January 15, 2019, this course replaces the previous CPR/AED with Health Care Provider Level.

  • All CPR-HCP certificates issued before January 15, 2019 will be valid until their expiry date
  • After January 15, 2019, those with CPR-HCP certificates cannot recertify in HCP, and instead will have the opportunity to take a CPR BLS full course
  • Going forward, those with CPR BLS certificates can recertify in a CPR BLS recertification course.*
  • Current First Aid Instructors are invited to complete a BLS bridging process in order to be certified to teach BLS – see details below.

 

BLS – Basic Life Support

Course Length

  • Full Course (1-year certification) – 4 hours
  • Recertification – 2 hours
  • Combined with a Standard First Aid Course – 2 days**
  • Combined with an Emergency First Aid Course – 1 day**

** Your Standard or Emergency First Aid certification is valid for three years, while the BLS can be recertified annually.

  • Combined with Emergency First Aid – $120.00

*Please note: to take a re-certification course you must hold a valid and current (non-expired) BLS certificate. Those with valid CPR-HCP certificates must take a BLS full course. Those with Heart & Stroke BLS certificates are welcome to take a Red Cross BLS recertification.

This level meets all ILCOR guidelines.

 

BLS Bridge for current First Aid Instructors

If you are currently certified as a First Aid Instructor, you are eligible to take a bridging course which will allow you to teach Basic Life Saving beginning in January 2019.

Step 1: BLS Participant Course. Titan Health & Safety is running a course for instructors on November 26th, 2018. Please call 403-452-7727 to register.

  • Basic Life Saving – $95.00
  • Airway Management (optional) – $20.00
  • Oxygen Administration (optional) – $20.00

Step 2: Online Bridging Course. Complete your online bridging course through the Canadian Red Cross website at https://myrc.redcross.ca

Instructors who have completed the above steps will be qualified to teach the BLS program.
