First Aid Instructor Course

The First Aid Instructor course provides candidates with the knowledge and skills to teach Canadian Red Cross First Aid & CPR courses:

  • Standard or Emergency First Aid with CPR/AED Level C
  • Standard or Emergency Child Care First Aid with CPR/AED Level B
  • CPR/AED, all levels

This course prepares participants to teach and facilitate both individual and group assignments; offers opportunities for practice teaching, and focuses on injury prevention principles, inclusion, and progressive learning.

  • Adhere to the Canadian Red Cross Standards of Behavior and the Group Charter

Prerequisite

Red Cross Instructor Full Course

- Current Standard First Aid with CPR/AED Level C certification

- 18+ years old

Course Steps

Step 1: Skills Evaluation

  • Demonstrate all Standard First Aid with CPR/AED Level C skills to a Teaching Experience Supervisor or an Instructor Trainer.

Step 2: Fundamentals of Instruction Online

  • Online course (7-8 hours of self-paced online learning) instruction focusing on teaching skills.

Step 3: Fundamentals of Instruction Classroom Component

  • Two in-class days
  • Focus on teaching skills and lesson planning
  • Receive feedback from peers and instructor.

Step 4: Discipline Specific Classroom Component

  • Two in-class days
  • Focus on First Aid and CPR skills
  • Receive feedback from peers and instructor.

Step 5: Teaching Experience

  • Independently develop lesson plans
  • Teach a Standard First Aid with CPR/AED Level C course with a supervising instructor
  • If all core areas are taught successfully, you receive your certification
  • Three attempts are allowed for this step.
  • This component must be completed within one year of the course date.

Transfer Course

What is a Transfer Pathway?

 If you already have a related qualification, you could save time and money on your First Aid Instructor course. See below for Transfer Options.

Transfer Pathway Option 1:

  • You are a qualified, certified instructor for a recognized First Aid agency, including:
    • St. John’s Ambulance
    • The Life Saving Society
  • You must complete:
    • Online Fundamentals of Instruction (7-8 hours)
    • Fundamentals of Instruction Classroom Component (2 days)
    • Teaching Experience
  • You are exempt from:
    • Discipline Specific Classroom Component (2 days)

Transfer Pathway Option 2: 

  • You are a
    • certified Canadian Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, or
    • Water Safety Instructor Trainer, or
    • A teacher at the elementary or high school level
  • You must complete:
    • Fundamentals of Instruction Online
    • Discipline Specific Classroom Component (2 days)
    • Teaching Experience
  • You are exempt from:
    • Fundamentals of Instruction classroom component.

Teaching Experience Supervisors

To become a teaching experience supervisor you must be a current Red Cross instructor already. This course is now online only and allows you to gain an additional certification to take students completing their instructor course into your classroom and help them complete their program.
