Online Heart & Stroke BLS (Basic Life Support) Courses

Online Basic Life Support courses meet Alberta Occupational Health & Safety first aid workplace legislation and Heart & Stroke Foundation training standards.

Register now for an Online Basic Life Support course and complete Part 1: Online Learning at home! Participants who complete the Online Learning will receive a completion certificate that is valid for the Heart & Stroke Foundation during Covid-19. Participants must take Part 2: Classroom Learning once in-person training resumes and it is safe to do so. After completing both parts, you’ll be issued your 1-year certification.

Blended Learning

Register now to complete Part 1: Online Learning at home. You will receive an email with instructions on how to access the Heart & Stroke Foundation’s online learning portal within 1 business day of registration.

Finish your online learning to receive a certificate of completion which is valid for Heart & Stroke Foundation requirements during Covid-19.

Part 2: Classroom Learning includes hands-on practical BLS skills. Participants must complete Part 1 before attending, and they must complete Part 2 once it is safe to do so. Classroom learning dates will be available once in-person training resumes.

Bring your certificate of completion to Part 2 as proof of eligibility. Complete Part 2 in order to receive your one-year certification.

Recertifications / Renewals

For Heart & Stroke Basic Life Support providers with certificates expiring between March 2020 through May 2020, Heart & Stroke provided a renewal grace period until September 30, 2020. Please note timelines may be extended. Online BLS recertification courses are also available.

Course Details

BLS provides the skills to recognize and respond to cardiovascular emergencies and choking for adults, children, and babies. Basic Life Support skills are required for nursing staff, doctors, EMS providers, and care aides, medical and dental professionals. You may also benefit from having your Basic Life Support level if you are a professional with a fire service or rescue team, a sports medicine professional, a lifeguard or a ski patroller. If you are not a first responder or medical professional, you may need CPR Level A or C.

Course Length

  • Full Course (1-year certification) – 2 hours online learning; 1 hour classroom learning
  • Recertification – 1 hour online learning; 1 hour classroom learning

  • Recertification – $75.00

  • Adult 1 and 2 Rescuer BLS
  • Adult Chest Compressions
  • Adult Breaths (Airway, Barrier Devices, Bag-Mask Devices)
  • Infant and Child 1 and 2 Rescuer BLS
  • Infant and Child Compressions
  • Infant and Child Breaths (Airway, Barrier Device, Bag-Mask Devices)
  • AED
  • Choking for Adult, Child, and Infant

*Please note: to take a re-certification course you must hold a valid and current (non-expired) Heart & Stroke BLS certificate. Those with Canadian Red Cross BLS or CPR-HCP certificates must take a Heart & Stroke renewal assessment in order to be eligible to take a Heart & Stroke recertification course.

This course meets all ILCOR guidelines.

Dates for Part 2: Classroom Learning are now available at our North Training Centre.
